A provider controls the keys
- Account recovery may be available through the provider.
- The provider controls access and transaction systems.
- You depend on the provider’s security, availability and rules.
You control the keys
- You approve transactions using credentials you control.
- You carry more responsibility for secure backup and recovery.
- Losing recovery information may permanently remove access.
Different tradeoffs
Custodial services can be familiar and may offer account support, but they require trust in the provider. Self-custodial wallets give the user direct control, but mistakes or lost recovery information may be impossible for another party to fix.
Neither model is automatically right for every person or situation. Before choosing a wallet, confirm who can access the keys, how transactions are signed and how recovery works.
Questions to ask
- Who can authorize a transaction?
- Who holds or can access the private keys?
- What happens if you lose your device?
- Can a provider reset access, restrict the account or recover credentials?
- What backup information must you protect?
